What is lig sacrospinale?

The ligamentum sacrospinale, also known as the sacrospinous ligament, is a thick, triangular ligament that spans the distance between the lower part of the sacrum and the ischial spine. It is one of two ligaments that help to form the greater and lesser sciatic foramina, which allow for the passage of important nerves and vessels in the pelvic region.

The ligament is composed of dense connective tissue and serves to stabilize the pelvic floor and support the weight of the body's trunk. It also helps to prevent the posterior rotation of the sacrum and plays a role in maintaining the proper alignment of the sacroiliac joint.

Injuries to the sacrospinous ligament can lead to instability and dysfunction of the pelvic floor, which can result in pain, discomfort, and other pelvic floor disorders. Treatment may involve physical therapy and exercises to improve pelvic floor strength and stability, as well as surgical intervention in severe cases.
